"Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve. America was targeted for attack because we're the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world. And no one will keep that light from shining." - President George W. Bush, September 11, 2001

Updates

It has been many months since I have updated my journal, and enough things have been happening at work lately that I felt it high time to update this page. In particular, we have been receiving quite a bit of attention from the media, despite our low profile. Since my last update in October, my employer Gene Codes has increased its staff significantly, causing us to change locations (our new office digs are cool). I have been to NYC twice, once on assignment with Howard, and once with the entire corporate staff which Howard flew out in January. But the main story of my daily life here in Ann Arbor over the past several months has been my work on the World Trade Center project. Most recently, I have moved to part-time work back onto Sequencher, particularly after attending this year's Worldwide Developer's Conference. So without further ado, I now attempt to bring you up to date...

WWDC with Students

At this year's WWDC in May, I was sent to interview students for perspective interns. Unfortunately, the most useful students had already had jobs lined up for the summer, so we were a bit late on the draw. Despite this, I found it very exciting to see the enthusiasm of the next generation Mac programmers and was particularly surprised at the number of Unix programmers excited to join the Mac OS X bandwagon.

I will have some pictures up soon from WWDC, but you can find me already online in the WWDC Picture Gallery for the Student Mixer on Sunday.

Entrepreneur of the Year

Gene Codes CEO and President Howard Cash won Eastern Michigan's 2002 Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Health Sciences. Many of the staff members were in attendance, as were the investors, and it was quite an exciting time. Pictures from the event are forthcoming.

Newsworthy Items

Gene Codes has been featured in several articles as of late. Listed below are just some of them:

The full Genome Technology article will be scanned in and posted on my web site later this week. I also plan to create a more readable HTML version of this article, as well as one for last October's issue devoted to Howard.

Television Debut

The ABC affiliate in Detroit, WXYZ-TV Channel 7 did a story on Gene Codes last Thursday (7/18/02) on their 11:00 news. It was a feature by Action News reporter Heather Catallo, winner of the 1998 Hearst National Television Award for Excellence in Journalism. The story specifically concentrates on CEO Howard Cash and the company's involvement in the forensic DNA identification software we are writing for the Medical Examiner's Office in New York City for the World Trade Center attack.

A video of this news item is available here. Alternatively, you can view the RealPlayer version of the entire half hour news broadcast from WXYZ's web page (available only through this week). Those who sit through the news video might see a shot or two of me, particularly toward the end.
